Record Grading Guide
At Retcon Records, we take grading seriously. Every vinyl record and album sleeve is carefully inspected based on the Goldmine Standard, ensuring you know exactly what to expect before you drop the needle. Below is our grading scale, from well-loved classics to near-perfect gems.
Vinyl Record Grading
Good (G) / Good Plus (G+)
Playable, but well-loved. A record with this grade has noticeable wear and surface noise but still plays. You may hear pops, clicks, or consistent background noise, but the music remains enjoyable. A G+ record will be in slightly better shape, with fewer scratches or a more solid playback experience.
Very Good (VG)
A solid, well-played record. Expect some visible wear, including light scratches and surface scuffs, but nothing deep enough to cause major skipping. There may be light background noise, but it won’t overpower the music. This is a great budget-friendly option for everyday listening.
Very Good Plus (VG+)
Well-cared for with minimal wear. A VG+ record has very few surface marks and plays with little to no background noise. You might hear an occasional pop in quiet passages, but it’s a high-quality listening experience overall. Many collectors prefer VG+ records for a balance of affordability and quality.
Near Mint (NM) – Sealed Only
Factory fresh, never played. We only grade a record as Near Mint (NM) if it is still sealed in its original shrink wrap. This means it has never been played and is in pristine condition. If you're looking for the closest thing to a brand-new vintage pressing, this is it!
Album Sleeve Grading
Good (G) / Good Plus (G+)
A sleeve in this condition may have noticeable ring wear, creases, or splits on the edges. There may be writing, stickers, or discoloration.
Very Good (VG)
The cover is intact but shows moderate wear, such as some fading, small creases, or minor edge wear. It still protects the record well and is a solid display piece.
Very Good Plus (VG+)
A VG+ sleeve has minimal signs of handling—just a few light scuffs or corner dings. The artwork remains vibrant, and the spine is fully intact.
Near Mint (NM) – Sealed Only
A Near Mint sleeve is flawless, still sealed in its original shrink wrap. No creases, no fading—just perfection.
